Let’s talk HOMEOPATHIC SELF-PRESCRIBING…

Updated: Dec 9, 2024

Homeopathy for acute illnesses is absolutely brilliant. I started using my homeopathic first aid kit when my son was a baby, with very little experience, but I soon realised that I was learning fast and it was working! The first aid kit had, without a doubt, become the most effective and used piece in my medicine cupboard.

Do you want to give it a go? If you are unsure,  answer these questions:

Do you want to lessen your GP and pharmacy visits?

Do you want to use less pharmaceutical drugs including ATB and lower the chances of side effects?

Do you want to be able to help yourself or family members immediately (no waiting for GP call or appointment)?

Do you often want to prevent illnesses before the full onset?

Do you want to prevent A&E visits?

Do you want to save money for various over the counter drugs?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, please consider buying one of the first aid kits – either Helios Helios Homeopathy - Shop - Homeopathic Products - First Aid Kits or Ainsworth Ainsworths Remedy Kits • Ainsworths • The First Name in Homoeopathy. I promise you, it will be the best money you have ever spent!

Both, Helios and Ainsworth homeopathic remedy kits include a little self-help guide which will help you to choose the correct remedy (Helios sell 18 remedy kit online, 36 remedy kit must be ordered over the phone; Ainsworth’s kits are larger - 42 remedies).

What does it help with? You name it, it’s there: coughs, colds, diarrhea, travel sickness, fever, flu, dental problems, breastfeeding issues, cuts and scrapes, support for fractures healing, eye inflammations, chicken pox, period pain, headache, shocks from accidents, earache, muscle pain…… and I could carry on for another page or two 😊

How to self-prescribe? Read the self-help guide thoroughly before attempting to prescribe.

·        First look at the complaint (for example find cough) and once you’ve read the complaint section, choose a few remedies which cover the most symptoms you are experiencing.

·        Then go into the remedies (Materia Medica) section, read the short description of your chosen remedies and pick one which has the closest symptom picture to your symptoms.

Sometimes, it might not be completely clear and you are not looking for ALL the symptoms of the remedy to fit your symptoms. As a rule, if you find at least 3 good symptoms in the remedy symptom picture which are very similar to yours, go for it.

How to take the remedy? Depending on the situation, take the remedy in clean mouth (if possible no drink or food for 15 mins before and after taking it, however, in very acute situations, ignore this rule) and see if you see any difference. In a very acute situation (severe pain, high fever, fracture, high anxiety of patient etc), take it more often – even every 10 mins. Otherwise you can take it every couple of hours or 3x day.

You should see a symptom shift and/or relief within about 3 doses of the remedy.  If you don’t, try to look for a remedy which might fit better to your symptom picture. If in doubt or feeling stuck, feel free to contact Helios or Ainsworth free contact helplines, they have qualified homeopaths who can advise which remedy might help.

After you feel better, you can discontinue taking the remedy or if your symptoms change, look for a new remedy that will fit your new complaints.

I hope it goes without saying that if you feel this is an emergency situation, you need to go to the A&E or contact 999 (or 111 if unsure). You can still use homeopathic remedies whilst waiting for the ambulance or on your way to A&E. Always do what feels safe in your particular situation!

The more you use the homeopathic first aid kit, the more you will know how to use it. Often, certain remedies might work for patients better then others. Once you find “your” remedy, you might realise that you often end up with symptoms matching this remedy (it might be because it possibly could be the acute remedy related to your constitutional remedy – a remedy state you most likely have outside of this acute phase).

Please note: for chronic problems, you need to see a homeopath, do not self-prescribe.

Now, did I get you interested? Are you seriously thinking about getting a kit and start self-prescribing? I have a little secret for you. CHE, the college where I study, offers a home prescriber course which used to cost about £120 (if I remember correctly) but is now FOR FREE! It’s a brilliant course by the one and only Hilery Dorrian, an amazing and very experienced homeopath. It’s a beautiful watch and you will learn a lot. You will definitely be able to self-prescribe for yourself and your family after this course. May bank holiday weekend is upon us so go ahead and register at CHE Online | The Home Prescriber Course | Hilery Dorrian

Have fun and happy self-prescribing 😊 Zdenka
